About Wardner No Mori Special
Wardner No Mori Special came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Toaplan. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling action games that filled the platform's library, a time when you could find a new fantasy adventure almost every month. This one was a home conversion of an arcade game, and it had a particular look and feel that made it stand out from the usual knights and dragons fare.
You control a boy named Wardner, navigating a cursed forest screen by screen. Your main goal is to rescue a girl named Prisna from a demon, which means fighting through five stages of monsters and environmental hazards. You start with a weak short-range attack, but you collect gems from defeated enemies and lanterns to buy better weapons from shops hidden in trees; upgrading to a fireball or a powerful sword completely changes your approach. The pacing is deliberate, as you methodically clear each screen of enemies before moving on, and the difficulty is steep, with limited continues. Playing it feels like a careful, persistent push through a hostile and beautifully strange world.
