About Wardner
Wardner came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Toaplan. It was part of that wave of early 90s action platformers that filled the library, a side scrolling adventure with a distinct look. You don't hear about it as often as some other titles from that year, but it has its own following.
You control a boy named Parker, whose girlfriend has been kidnapped and taken to a tower. Your goal is to climb this tower, screen by screen, to rescue her. You start with a weak fireball, but you collect gold from defeated enemies and breakable blocks to buy better weapons and items from shops hidden in the stages. This shop system is a key mechanic, letting you upgrade your firepower or purchase keys to unlock doors blocking your path. The pacing is deliberate; you clear one contained screen before moving to the next, and the difficulty is steep, with tricky enemy placements and instant death pits. Playing Wardner feels like a careful, methodical climb where every piece of gold matters.
