Volfied came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, published by Taito. It was the third game in the QIX series, but it replaced the earlier games' abstract geometric style with a science fiction theme. This was a time when developers were experimenting with how to translate arcade puzzle mechanics to home consoles, and Volfied was a solid attempt at that.

You control a small ship that flies around the perimeter of each screen. Your goal is to claim territory by drawing lines across the playfield to create closed shapes, which then fill in and become your color. The challenge is to do this while avoiding several types of enemies that patrol the area; if one touches your ship or the line you are currently drawing, you lose a life. The game is methodical, requiring you to carefully plan your routes and claim sections bit by bit, but the tension ramps up quickly as the screen gets more crowded. Boss fights at the end of certain stages break up the pattern by introducing larger, more aggressive foes you must outmaneuver. Playing Volfied feels like a constant, careful dance between bold expansion and cautious retreat.
