So Universal Soldier is basically a total overhaul of Turrican 2 for the Genesis, but with Jean-Claude Van Damme slapped all over it. They redid all the sprites to match the movie, shuffled the levels around, and added some new stages—though honestly, it still feels a lot like Turrican at its core. The weapons are beefy, the jumps are floaty, and the bosses take way too many hits (in a good way).
First thing you’ll notice? The sprite work is actually pretty solid for a movie tie-in. JCVD’s pixelated mullet is glorious, and the guns feel chunky when you fire them. Some of the new stages have this weird mix of military bases and sci-fi corridors, which… kind of fits the movie, I guess? It’s janky but weirdly fun if you’re into ‘90s action cheese.
Just don’t go in expecting a masterpiece—it’s a reskin with some extra bits, but hey, that’s half the charm of these old licensed games.
