Ultimate Qix came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, published by Taito. It was part of that wave of arcade-style puzzle games that found a solid home on the 16-bit console, offering a distinct kind of spatial challenge compared to the more common shooters and platformers of the time.

You control a small cursor, moving it around the perimeter of a blank screen. Your goal is to claim territory by drawing lines from the edges inward, forming rectangles to fill the playfield. The main threat comes from the Qix, an unpredictable, shimmering shape that moves erratically within the unclaimed space; if it touches a line while you are drawing, you lose a life. You can choose between slow, safe lines that score more points or fast, risky lines to claim space quickly. The game starts deceptively simple but becomes intensely difficult as faster, more aggressive enemies appear. It creates a tense, almost meditative focus as you partition the screen while dodging hazards.
