About Toughman Contest
Toughman Contest came out for the Sega Genesis in 1995, published by EA Sports. It was part of that wave of mid-90s sports games trying to capture a specific, gritty atmosphere. You controlled a boxer working his way up through a fighting circuit, aiming for the championship title. The main objective was straightforward: win fights, earn money, and improve your fighter's stats between matches.
You managed your boxer's training between fights, spending your winnings on better stamina, power, and speed. The actual matches played out from a side view, with you throwing jabs, hooks, and uppercuts while carefully blocking and dodging. A key mechanic was the stamina bar; you had to pace your attacks and avoid getting too tired, or you'd be left vulnerable. The difficulty ramped up noticeably as you faced tougher opponents who could punish mistakes quickly. It felt like a constant balancing act between aggressive offense and defensive patience.
