Toe Jam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron is one of those weird, wonderful Genesis games that just oozes personality. You play as the funky alien duo—now back on their home planet—trying to round up escaped Earthlings who’ve crash-landed and started causing chaos. It’s a side-scroller this time, totally different from the first game’s roguelike vibe, but still packed with that same offbeat humor.
The levels are these trippy, colorful landscapes full of hidden nooks and weird little secrets. You’ll be jumping, throwing stuff, and occasionally riding a giant worm (because why not?). The humans you’re chasing all have their own ridiculous behaviors—some panic and run, others straight-up attack you with lawn chairs. The soundtrack? Pure funk gold, obviously.
It’s not perfect—the hit detection can be janky, and some of the platforming feels stiff—but there’s nothing else quite like it. If you dig quirky ‘90s charm, this one’s a time capsule worth cracking open.
