I first played The World Ends with You on the Nintendo DS back in 2007, a time when developers were really starting to experiment with the handheld's dual screens and touch controls. It was developed and published by Square Enix, and it stood out immediately for its modern Shibuya setting, a stark contrast to the fantasy worlds the company was known for. You step into the shoes of Neku, a disaffected teenager who wakes up in a twisted version of Tokyo with no memory of how he got there, forced to compete in a deadly game for a chance to return to life.

You control Neku on the bottom screen, using the stylus to activate his psychic pins by tapping, slashing, or drawing specific patterns, while your partner character fights on the top screen, controlled with the D-pad or face buttons. Your main goal is to survive the seven-day Reapers' Game by completing daily missions, which often involve defeating groups of monsters called Noise. The combat is frantic, demanding you manage two separate battles at once, and exploration is screen-by-screen, uncovering secrets and taking on side quests from the many NPCs. The game doesn't hold your hand, and the learning curve for managing both characters can be steep, but pulling off a perfect combo chain while dodging attacks is incredibly satisfying. It feels like a constant, energetic puzzle where your reflexes and multitasking are always being tested.
