Remember that weird-but-cool '90s movie where Macaulay Culkin gets sucked into a library? The Pagemaster on Genesis is basically that, but with more pixelated platforming. You jump between different book genres—one minute you're dodging pirate swords in an adventure novel, the next you're getting chased by Frankenstein in horror mode. The vibe's all over the place, but in a fun way.
Controls feel a little stiff at first (this is a Genesis game), but once you get used to the rhythm, it's got that satisfying old-school challenge. Some of the enemy patterns are brutal—I died like five times to those floating book monsters before figuring out their timing. And the music? Surprisingly moody for a kids' movie tie-in, especially the horror world's creepy organ theme.
It's not the deepest platformer out there, but there's something charming about how it throws random stuff at you. One level you're riding a giant pencil, the next you're platforming on floating letters. If you grew up with this era of games, it hits that nostalgia sweet spot.
