I first played The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks on the Nintendo DS back in 2009. It was developed and published by Nintendo, arriving later in the handheld's life when touch screen controls were a well established feature. This game felt like a direct follow up to Phantom Hourglass, continuing that particular style of Zelda adventure on the same hardware.

You control Link, a young engineer tasked with restoring the dormant Spirit Tracks that bind the land together. Your main goal is to stop the demon Malladus from returning, which involves traveling across the world by driving a train. The touch screen is used for nearly everything; you tap to move Link, draw paths for his boomerang, and slash the stylus to swing his sword. A major part of the game is exploring multi floor dungeons, solving environmental puzzles, and utilizing a phantom companion that you can directly possess and command. The pacing is steady, with some repetition in revisiting the central Tower of Spirits, but the difficulty is manageable and the puzzles are clever. Driving the train between locations, watching the scenery change, gives the whole journey a relaxed, methodical feel.
