Tecmo World Cup '92 is one of those early '90s soccer games that somehow nails the chaos of actual football—just with way more sliding tackles and questionable physics. The pixelated players have this weird, bouncy charm to them, and matches get surprisingly intense once you figure out how to actually aim a shot (hint: it's harder than it looks).
You pick from a bunch of national teams—Italy’s defense is solid, but Brazil’s strikers are ridiculously fast—and then it’s just pure arcade-style madness. Slide into opponents, launch absurdly high passes, and occasionally pull off a bicycle kick just because you can. The commentary’s hilariously sparse ("GOOOOAL!"), and the crowd noise sounds like someone recorded a tin can full of bees, but that’s part of the retro appeal.
It’s not FIFA, and that’s the point. If you’ve ever wanted a soccer game where the ball sticks to your foot like glue until three defenders pile on you at once, this is it. Still holds up if you’re into janky, fast-paced sports games from the Genesis era.
