Sword of Vermilion came out for the Sega Genesis in 1989, developed and published by Sega itself. You play as a young man named Tsukasa, whose father, the king, is murdered by a fiendish warlock. The game sends you on a quest across the continent of Excalabria to avenge him.

You control Tsukasa from a top down perspective on the world map, moving screen by screen. Towns and dungeons switch to a first person view for exploration. Combat happens in real time on a separate side scrolling battlefield; you swing your sword or fire a bow at monsters that rush toward you. Your main goal is to gather the eight scattered rings that form the Sword of Vermilion, which means delving into many dungeons and defeating the guardians within. The game can feel slow and the difficulty is uneven, with some sudden spikes in monster strength. Exploring the world and steadily improving your character provides a solid, if sometimes plodding, sense of adventure.
