Superstar Soccer Deluxe is that kind of Genesis-era soccer game where the players look like little chunky sprites but somehow still pull off ridiculous bicycle kicks. The controls are simple—pass, shoot, tackle—but matches get surprisingly intense once you figure out how to curve shots just right. I still remember the first time I accidentally launched the ball from midfield and somehow scored; the keeper just flailed at it like a confused muppet.
It’s not FIFA, obviously—no fancy licenses or realistic physics here—but there’s something weirdly satisfying about the way the ball bounces unpredictably off defenders. The pixelated crowds even do a little wave animation when you score. If you’ve got nostalgia for that era of sports games where everything was a little janky but full of personality, this one’s a solid time capsule.
