Super Thunder Blade came out for the Sega Genesis in 1988, a launch title from Sega itself. It was one of those early games that tried to show off what the new hardware could do, putting you right into the cockpit of a helicopter. You pilot a combat helicopter through a series of stages, starting with a free-flying segment and then transitioning to a ground assault. Your main goal is simply to survive the onslaught of enemy vehicles and turrets, destroying everything in your path. The gameplay splits between two distinct phases: an open, behind-the-craft view where you dodge fire from all directions, and a closer, top-down section where you methodically clear out ground targets. The controls are notoriously stiff, making precise movement a constant challenge, and the difficulty spikes quickly, often feeling less about skill and more about memorizing enemy placements.
