You control a modern ninja navigating side scrolling stages filled with enemy soldiers and supernatural threats. Your main goal is to survive each level, defeating bosses and rescuing hostages when they appear. Signature mechanics include using a limited supply of shurikens for ranged attacks and a close range sword slash for when enemies get too near. The game retains the methodical, screen by screen exploration of its predecessor, requiring you to clear one area of foes before advancing. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially with the limited ammunition.
