Street Smart on the Genesis is one of those early fighting games that feels rough around the edges but has its own weird charm. You pick from these exaggerated street brawlers—some dude with a leather jacket, a guy who looks like he bench-presses cars—and just start throwing hands in these grimy urban backdrops. The controls are stiff compared to later fighters, but there’s something satisfying about landing a spinning kick that sends your opponent flying into a trash can.
It’s not as polished as Street Fighter II, but the two-player mode is where it shines. My friend and I used to waste hours trying to cheese each other with the same two moves that actually worked. The music’s got that classic Genesis synth-grit, too—all bass and attitude. If you’re into retro fighters, it’s a fun little time capsule of when devs were still figuring out how to make fists feel heavy on a 16-bit system.
