I remember picking up Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for the Sega Genesis back in 1995. It was developed by Novotrade International, the same studio that made the Ecco the Dolphin games. This was during that era on the Genesis where licensed titles were a real mixed bag; some were surprisingly deep, while others felt rushed. This one always stood out to me as an attempt to do something a bit different with the Star Trek license, moving away from the ship combat you saw in other games and onto the station itself.

You control a single security officer tasked with defending Deep Space Nine from a Cardassian invasion. The main objective is to repel the boarders and restore order across the station's various sections. The gameplay is split between two distinct modes. You explore the station screen by screen in an overhead view, talking to characters and activating consoles. Then, you switch to a first-person perspective for the combat sequences, where you aim and fire your phaser at Cardassian soldiers in the corridors. You also have to manage your phaser's power settings and hunt for keycards to unlock new areas. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you're not careful with your resources. It feels like a tense, lonely fight to reclaim a familiar place that has been violently taken over.
