About Splatterhouse Part 3
Splatterhouse Part 3 came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed and published by Namco. It was part of that wave of games pushing the limits of what the 16-bit hardware could show, especially in terms of its horror themes. You played as Rick Taylor, a guy fused with a cursed mask, trying to save his girlfriend from monsters. The game stood out because it wasn't just another action platformer; it had a grimy, comic book aesthetic that felt different from the brighter titles on the system.
You control Rick through a series of side-scrolling stages, moving screen by screen to clear out the creatures in your path. Your main goal is to rescue your girlfriend Jennifer, which involves fighting through haunted mansions and other monstrous locations. The combat lets you punch, kick, and use weapons you pick up, like pipes or swords. A key mechanic is the branching path system; at certain points you choose which way to go, and that changes which levels you play and the bosses you face. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is pretty unforgiving, with enemies that swarm you and bosses that demand quick reflexes. Playing it feels like a desperate, constant brawl where every new screen could be your last.
