About Spectrobes
Spectrobes came out for the Nintendo DS in 2007, developed by Jupiter Corporation, the same studio behind some of the Kingdom Hearts handheld titles. It arrived during a period when the DS was full of experimental games trying new things with the touchscreen and dual displays, and this one definitely carved out its own niche.
You play as a young planetary patrol officer named Rallen. After discovering a fossil, you learn you can excavate and awaken ancient creatures called Spectrobes to fight an invading force known as the Krawl. The core loop involves exploring planets screen by screen, using the DS stylus to carefully unearth fossils in a mini game, and then nurturing the creatures you revive. You feed them, evolve them, and command them in real time battles against the Krawl. The pacing is methodical, focused more on the cycle of discovery and growth than on fast paced action. It feels like a mix of fossil hunting, pet raising, and monster battling all rolled into one.
