Okay, so Sonic Colors on DS is basically what happens when Sonic Team remembers how to make a good 2D platformer. You’ve got the usual speed-running chaos, but with these little alien Wisps that give Sonic wild new abilities—like turning into a laser or a drill. The first time I got the hover Wisp, I totally faceplanted into spikes because I didn’t realize how floaty it was. Classic Sonic learning curve.
The levels are way more colorful than your average DS game, and some of the gimmicks actually work (looking at you, water park stage). It’s not perfect—the 3D sections feel a bit clunky—but when it leans into pure 2D platforming, it’s some of the best Sonic has felt on handheld. Just don’t expect a deep story. Robotnik’s running a space amusement park, the Wisps are sad, and Sonic quips a lot. Standard stuff.
If you’ve got a soft spot for the blue blur or just want a solid platformer with some creative twists, this one’s worth dusting off the DS for.
