If you've ever played Sonic 2 and thought, "Man, this is great, but what if it had some of Sonic 3's moves and polish?"—well, someone out there agreed. The S3 Edition is a fan-made remix that tweaks the classic with smoother physics, the insta-shield from Sonic 3, and even lets you play as Knuckles (because who doesn’t love wrecking walls?).

It still feels like the original—Chemical Plant’s bouncy tubes, Emerald Hill’s loops—but with little upgrades that make it less janky. First time I tried the drop dash, I faceplanted into a spike trap, but hey, that’s Sonic for you. The sprite work’s cleaner too, though purists might grumble about the changes.

Definitely the best way to replay this one if you’ve burned through the vanilla version too many times.
