About Socket
Socket was a Sega Genesis game released in 1993 by Vic Tokai. It arrived during a period when the platform was saturated with mascot platformers, and it attempted to stand out with a distinct, electric theme. The game features a time-traveling, electric-plug-shaped hero named Socket, who is tasked with fixing a corrupted power grid across different eras.
You control Socket directly, navigating him through side-scrolling levels that are divided into distinct, screen-by-screen areas. Your main goal is to travel through prehistoric, present-day, and futuristic settings to collect power orbs and defeat the robotic enemies causing the disruption. Signature mechanics include using Socket's plug-head to connect to specific sockets in the environment, which often opens new paths or activates platforms, and a chargeable electric projectile attack for combat. The pacing is generally fast, with some demanding platforming sections and enemy patterns that require quick reflexes. Playing Socket feels like a brisk, sometimes chaotic, test of your timing and spatial awareness as you zap foes and connect to the world around you.
