About Side Pocket
Side Pocket came out for the Sega Genesis in 1992, published by Data East. It was part of that wave of arcade style sports games that felt right at home on the console, a straightforward pool simulation without the frills of later titles. You got a solid digital version of billiards that focused on the fundamentals of the game.
You control a cue stick, positioning it around the table and setting your shot power and spin. The main goal is to clear the table of all your assigned balls, then sink the 8-ball to win. Two mechanics define the game: a power meter for your shot strength and the ability to apply English, putting spin on the cue ball to control its path after contact. The game progresses screen by screen through different pool halls, each with a unique table layout, and the physics demand precision, making even simple shots require careful planning. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes tense, game of patience and geometry.
