I first came across Shui Hu Zhuan on the Sega Genesis back in 1996, a time when the 16-bit era was still going strong. It was developed by Neverland, a name I didn't recognize at the time, and it stood out for trying something different. While most games were about fantasy or sci-fi, this one was based on an old Chinese novel, which immediately caught my attention.

You control one of the 108 heroes from the story, starting with Shi Jin, and you explore a large world screen by screen. Your main goal is to recruit other heroes to your cause, which you do by finding them in towns or defeating them in combat. The game mixes exploration with action; you use a sword for close fights and a bow for ranged attacks, and you can switch between characters you've recruited. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is noticeable, especially when navigating some of the trickier enemy patterns. Playing it feels like piecing together a grand adventure, one hero at a time.
