Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey came out for the Nintendo DS in 2009, developed by Atlus. It's a first-person dungeon crawler that drops you into a mysterious, expanding void called the Schwarzwelt, which has appeared at the South Pole and threatens to consume the world.

You play as a United Nations soldier sent in to investigate and stop the anomaly. Your time is spent navigating the labyrinthine sectors of the Schwarzwelt one grid square at a time, mapping the terrain and engaging in turn-based battles. A core part of the gameplay is the Demon Source system, where you analyze enemy weaknesses to unlock new sources for crafting powerful equipment. The other major mechanic is demon negotiation; instead of just fighting every monster, you talk to them, answering their questions and offering items or money to persuade them to join your party. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is unflinching, demanding careful party management and strategic use of your resources. Exploring its hostile, otherworldly corridors creates a constant, gripping tension between discovery and danger.
