About Sega Channel (prototype)
I remember hearing about the Sega Channel prototype back when the Genesis was the main console in my house. It was a service Sega was testing, a way to get games over a cable line instead of buying cartridges. The idea was that you would plug a special adapter into the Genesis and get a rotating selection of titles each month. It felt like a glimpse into the future of how we might play games, even though it never got a wide release.
You controlled the on-screen menu with your D-pad, scrolling through a grid of available games. The main objective was simply to browse and pick something to play, almost like an early digital storefront. The signature mechanic was the monthly rotation; the library would change, so you had a limited time to try a game before it was replaced. Another key feature was the direct download, which meant no trips to the rental store. The pacing was entirely your own, dictated by your curiosity. It felt like having a video game magazine come to life, where you could actually play the demos you read about.
