About Ristar ? The Shooting Star
Ristar: The Shooting Star came out for the Sega Genesis in 1995, developed and published by Sega. It arrived during a time when platformers were everywhere, but it always stood out to me for its unique approach to movement and combat. You don't just jump on enemies; you use Ristar's stretchy arms to grab them.
You control Ristar, a little star person on a mission to rescue his father and free the Valdi system from the tyrannical pirate Greedy. The main objective is to travel through a series of themed planets, each with its own set of levels, defeating bosses to progress. The signature mechanic is Ristar's ability to stretch his arms to grab onto poles, swing across gaps, and, most importantly, latch onto enemies and slam them. You explore levels screen by screen, often needing to find keys or hit switches to open new paths. The pacing is deliberate, asking you to look around and use your grabbing skills thoughtfully rather than just rushing through. It feels fluid and surprisingly tactile, a game where your main tool is a pair of helpful, extendable hands.
