Ranger X came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Gau Entertainment and published by Sega. It was part of that wave of late Genesis games that really pushed the hardware, with detailed sprites and a lot happening on screen at once. You could tell developers were getting comfortable with the system, creating more ambitious action games before the shift to 32-bit consoles.

You control a ranger piloting a powerful exosuit, fighting through a mechanized enemy force. Your main goal is to stop an invasion by moving through side-scrolling stages, destroying everything in your path. The signature mechanics are the dual control of the ranger and his separate, smaller support vehicle; you can jump out of the main suit to access narrow passages or attack from two angles at once. Another key feature is the overdrive system, a temporary power-up that unleashes a screen-clearing attack when your health and special weapon meters are both full. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is demanding, requiring quick reflexes to manage both your character and his support unit. It feels like a constant, tense juggling act between mobility and firepower.
