About Puyo Puyo
I first played Puyo Puyo on the Sega Genesis back in 1992, a game developed by Compile. It was a time when puzzle games were finding their footing on consoles, and this one stood out for its bright colors and frantic energy. It wasn't trying to be a sprawling adventure; it was a focused, two-player duel that felt perfectly at home on the system.
You control a cursor that drops pairs of colored blobs, called Puyos, from the top of the screen. The main goal is to clear your own board by connecting four or more Puyos of the same color. The real strategy comes from creating chain reactions, where clearing one set causes others to fall and connect, setting off a cascade. Against an opponent, these chains send nuisance Puyos, gray blobs that clog their screen. The game starts deceptively simple, but the pace quickens dramatically as you learn to plan several moves ahead. It feels like a mental sprint where a single miscalculation can bury you, but a well-executed chain is incredibly satisfying.
