Puyo Puyo on the Genesis is one of those games that looks cute but will absolutely wreck you if you're not careful. You're dropping these squishy little blobs (Puyos, apparently) and trying to match four of the same color—simple, right? Then suddenly your opponent drops a massive combo and your screen fills with garbage Puyos. That's when the panic sets in.
The characters are ridiculous in the best way—weird little wizards and grinning slimes cheering or crying depending on how badly you're doing. The first time I played, I thought it was just a chill puzzle game. Ten minutes later, I was sweating over chain reactions, trying to set up those satisfying multi-clears that wipe half the board at once.
It's got that perfect balance where you can play casually, but if you really dig in, there's a ton of depth. Just don't blame me when you start seeing Puyos in your sleep. Still one of the best competitive puzzle games out there.
