Capcom released The Punisher for the Sega Genesis in 1994, bringing their arcade brawler home. It was a time when comic book games were plentiful, and this one fit right in with other side scrolling action titles on the system. You could play as either Frank Castle, the Punisher, or as his ally Nick Fury, which was a nice option for a friend to join in.

You control the Punisher through urban environments, moving from left to right and clearing each screen of thugs before progressing. Your main goal is to fight through waves of enemies across various stages to take down the Kingpin. The gameplay involves straightforward punching and kicking, but you can also pick up weapons dropped by enemies, like knives and pistols, to deal more damage. A unique mechanic lets you perform a special desperation attack when your health is critically low, which can clear the immediate area. The game moves at a brisk pace and the difficulty can be punishing, especially when dealing with swarms of attackers and screen filling bosses. It feels like a solid, straightforward brawl from start to finish.
