About Power Drive
Power Drive came out for the Sega Genesis in 1994, published by U.S. Gold. It was part of that wave of top-down racers on the system, a time when developers were really pushing what the hardware could do with fast scrolling and detailed sprites. This one always stood out to me for its visual style and the sheer number of tracks it packed in.
You control an off-road vehicle through a series of point to point races across different environments like deserts and forests. The main goal is simple: finish first. The signature mechanics are the screen by screen exploration of the branching course map and the constant need to manage your car's fuel and damage. You have to find garages and fuel depots hidden on the map screens to keep going, which adds a layer of strategy to the straight-line speed. The pacing is relentless, and the computer opponents are tough; a single crash can ruin a perfect run. Driving feels weighty and a bit unpredictable, making every successful landing after a jump a genuine relief.
