Power Athlete is one of those weird, early '90s Sega Genesis sports brawlers that feels like someone threw Street Fighter and the Olympics into a blender. You pick from these absurdly jacked athletes—shot putters, weightlifters, even a hammer thrower—and then just whale on each other in arenas full of hazards. The hammer guy’s spinning attack is ridiculous, by the way.

It’s janky in that classic 16-bit way, with stiff controls and some questionable hit detection, but there’s something charming about how over-the-top it is. The announcer yells in Japanese the whole time, and the crowd cheers like you’re at some kind of violent track meet. Definitely more fun with a friend, though the AI opponents get cheap fast.

If you’re into obscure fighting games or just want to see a discus thrower uppercut a pole vaulter, it’s worth a quick play.
