Power Athlete is a Japan only release for the Sega Genesis, also known as the Mega Drive. It was published by NCS, a company known for bringing various anime and manga adaptations to consoles. This game arrived during a period when the Genesis was filled with side scrolling action titles, many of which were trying to capture the energy of popular arcade brawlers.

You control one of two martial artists, Ken or Ryu (not the Street Fighter characters), as you move from left to right through urban and industrial stages. Your main goal is simply to fight through waves of thugs to reach the end of each level. Your character can punch, kick, and perform a special spinning attack that consumes a portion of your health bar. You also have a super attack, activated by pressing two buttons, which clears the screen of most enemies but leaves you temporarily drained and vulnerable. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is unforgiving; enemies attack relentlessly and can quickly corner you. Playing it feels like a constant, frantic scramble to survive the next onslaught.
