Populous on the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive, if you're fancy) is basically the granddaddy of god games—before Black & White, before even Dungeon Keeper. You play as a deity shaping the land for your little worshippers, raising mountains or flattening terrain so they can build villages and eventually go to war with rival tribes. It’s slower than later god games, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about watching your followers multiply because you nudged the landscape just right.
The controls take a minute to get used to—this was 1989, after all—but once you get the hang of summoning disasters or gently guiding your people toward enemy settlements, it’s hard to stop. Just don’t expect flashy miracles; your power grows gradually, and early on, you’ll mostly be tweaking hills while your tiny followers figure things out. The Japanese version’s the same as the original, but hey, it’s cool to see the kanji on the box.
