I first played Populous on the Sega Genesis in 1990, a port of the computer game developed by Bullfrog Productions. It was a different kind of strategy game for the console at the time, focusing on indirect control over a world rather than direct action.

You control the land itself as a deity, guiding your followers from a top down view. Your main goal is to help your people build, multiply, and ultimately wipe out the rival tribe worshiping an opposing god. You don't command units directly. Instead, you raise and lower terrain to create livable space, cast spells like earthquakes or swamps to harass the enemy, and watch as your followers autonomously build huts and go to war. The game plays out slowly, methodically, across many individual maps, and the difficulty comes from managing your limited divine power while the enemy god does the same. It feels like conducting a long term, territorial experiment from a distant vantage point.
