I first played Populous on the Sega Genesis back in 1991, a game developed by Bullfrog Productions. It was one of those titles that felt different from the typical platformers and shooters of the era. Instead of controlling a single character, you managed an entire world from above, which was a novel concept at the time.

In the game, you act as a deity for your tribe of followers. Your main goal is to grow your population and guide them to conquer the opposing tribe on the other side of the map. You don't directly command individual people; instead, you shape the landscape itself, raising and lowering land to create habitable space and connect islands. You also cast spells to cause earthquakes, summon swamps, or unleash tornadoes on your enemy's settlements. The game unfolds slowly, requiring patience as you watch your followers build and spread, but the difficulty ramps up as the enemy god becomes more aggressive. It feels like a strategic puzzle where you are a distant, powerful force nudging your people toward dominance.
