I first played Populous on the Sega Genesis back in 1991, a game developed by Bullfrog Productions. It was a different kind of strategy game for its time on the console, focusing on indirect control over a world rather than direct unit commands.

You control the land itself as a god, raising and lowering terrain to guide your followers. Your main goal is to help your people build homes and expand their population until they are strong enough to overwhelm the rival tribe on the other side of the map. Your primary tools are the powers to sculpt the landscape, place the occasional natural disaster like an earthquake or a flood on enemy settlements, and indirectly influence your followers' actions. The game is methodical; you spend a lot of time watching and adjusting the world, waiting for your population to grow. It feels like a slow, deliberate puzzle where you are shaping the world from above, and a successful crusade against your rival is deeply satisfying.
