Pokémon Dreamland (Kin Hack) is one of those weird, charming ROM hacks for the Game Boy Color that remixes the original Pokémon Crystal into something... different. The starters are swapped out for oddball picks, wild encounters get shuffled, and some of the dialogue has this offbeat, almost dreamlike tone to it. Not gonna lie, the first time I ran into a level 3 Mewtwo in the grass outside New Bark Town, I had to double-check I wasn’t hallucinating.

It’s definitely janky in places—some of the sprites are glitchy, and the balance is all over the place—but that’s part of the fun. You never know what weird team combo you’ll stumble into next. If you’ve played Crystal to death and want a fresh, slightly unhinged take on Johto, this is worth a look.
