Pokémon Christmas 2012 is one of those weird little fan-made ROM hacks for the Game Boy Color—you know, the kind that pops up around the holidays with a festive twist. It’s basically a reskin of the original Pokémon games, but everything’s decked out in snow, Christmas trees, and trainers dressed like Santa. The starters? Probably something ridiculous like a fire-type Rudolph or an ice-type snowman.
It’s janky in that charming, homemade way—dialogue is all holiday-themed, wild Pokémon are wintery variants, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Elite Four is just a bunch of gym leaders in ugly sweaters. Not exactly a deep RPG experience, but if you’ve ever wanted to battle your way through a pixelated North Pole, here’s your chance. Just don’t expect Nintendo-level polish.
