About Pele! (usa, Europe)
I remember picking up Pele! for the Sega Genesis back in 1994, published by Accolade. It was one of many sports titles trying to carve out a space on the system, and having the famous player's name on the box certainly caught my eye. The game offered a selection of 40 teams from 32 countries, which felt substantial at the time, along with four main modes: Exhibition, Practice, Tournament, and Season. You could even edit your team's kits before a match, a small but appreciated touch for customization.
In practice, you control a team of soccer players from an isometric perspective. The main objective is to score goals and win matches across the different game modes. A signature mechanic is the control scheme, which is oriented to the pitch rather than the direction you press on the D-pad; this often made it confusing to figure out which way your player was moving. Another key feature was the variety of play modes, letting you jump into a quick match or commit to a longer tournament. The pacing felt slow and the gameplay often came across as bland, lacking the excitement you'd expect. Ultimately, playing Pele! felt like a missed opportunity, failing to live up to the promise of its namesake.
