About Open Season
Open Season was a late release for the Sega Genesis, arriving in 2006 from Ubisoft Montreal. It was unusual to see a new game for the console so long after its prime, and it was based on the animated film from that same year. The game exists as a curious artifact, a platformer from a major publisher that arrived when most developers had moved on to newer systems.
You control Boog, a domesticated grizzly bear, and Elliot, a scrawny one antlered deer, switching between them to navigate levels. Your main goal is to cause as much chaos as possible in the forest and the nearby town, fending off hunters and causing mischief. The gameplay involves straightforward platforming, using each character's unique abilities; Boog can break obstacles and perform a powerful ground pound, while Elliot is faster and can reach higher areas. You collect acorns and other items, and the levels are structured screen by screen with simple combat against hunters and other animals. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty is generally manageable, though some enemy patterns require quick reactions. It feels like a simple, cartoonish romp through a familiar movie world.
