Nightmare Circus is one of those weird, creepy Genesis platformers that sticks with you—like, why is the clown juggling eyeballs? You start off dodging fire-breathing acrobats and leaping between rickety carnival platforms, and it only gets weirder from there. The music’s all off-key carnival tunes, which somehow makes the whole thing feel even more unsettling.
It’s tough, too. One wrong jump and you’re falling into a pit of… I don’t even know what those spiky things are supposed to be. But the art style’s got this grimy, hand-drawn look that makes the whole circus feel alive in a gross, fascinating way. If you’re into retro games that don’t hold your hand, this one’s a trip worth taking.
