About Nightmare Circus
Nightmare Circus came out for the Sega Genesis in 1996, a time when the 16-bit era was still producing interesting titles. It was developed and published by Sega, a straightforward platformer that arrived late in the console's life. You don't hear much about it, but it has a certain presence.
You control a young boy named Toby, who must rescue his sister from a sinister circus. The game plays out across side scrolling stages, each themed after a different circus attraction. Your main tools are a slingshot for attacking enemies and a double jump for navigating the platforms. The level design is unforgiving, with instant death pits and enemies that require precise timing to hit. You collect balloons to earn extra lives, a small consolation in a game that demands careful movement. Playing it feels like a constant, tense negotiation with the environment.
