About New 3d Golf Simulation Pebble Beach No Hatou (japan)
I picked up New 3D Golf Simulation Pebble Beach no Hatou for the Sega Genesis back in 1994. It was published by Sega, and at the time, it was one of the more serious attempts at a 3D golf game on the system. The graphics tried to push the hardware with its polygonal look, which was a step beyond the sprite-based sports titles common on the 16-bit consoles.
You control a golfer through a full round on a digital recreation of Pebble Beach. The main objective is to complete 18 holes with the lowest score possible. The game uses a three-click swing meter for your shots; you press the button to start the power bar, again to set the power, and a final time to determine the accuracy of your shot. You can also adjust your stance and club selection before each swing. The wind and course terrain play a significant role, making you think carefully about each shot. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty comes from reading the greens and managing your club choices. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately satisfying simulation of the sport.
