NBA All-Star Challenge is one of those early '90s basketball games that somehow nails the arcade feel without getting too complicated. You pick your player—Jordan, Magic, Barkley, the usual legends—and jump straight into either a one-on-one showdown or a three-point shootout. The controls are simple: shoot, dunk, steal, and that’s about it. No fancy plays or complicated strategies, just pure, fast-paced hoops.
The animations are hilariously stiff by today’s standards, but there’s something satisfying about the way your player awkwardly shuffles down the court before launching into a gravity-defying dunk. And the three-point contest? Way harder than it looks—timing is everything. If you grew up with a Genesis, this was probably the closest you got to feeling like an All-Star without leaving your couch.
It’s not deep, but it’s the kind of game you fire up when you just want to mess around for 20 minutes. The nostalgia hits hard, especially if you remember playing it back in the day.
