Mr Nutz on the Sega Genesis is one of those weirdly charming platformers that flew under the radar back in the day. You play as this hyperactive squirrel bouncing between tree branches, dodging bees, and collecting acorns like your life depends on it—which, honestly, it kinda does.

The first thing you’ll notice is how bright and bouncy everything feels. The colors pop, the music’s got this upbeat chip-tune energy, and Mr Nutz himself has this goofy sprint animation where his little legs go wild. At first, the controls take a second to click—you’ve got this weird mid-air hover move that either saves you or sends you straight into spikes—but once it does, chaining jumps off mushrooms and enemies feels surprisingly smooth.

It’s not all sunshine, though. Some of those enemy placements are downright sneaky, and the later levels get brutal if you’re not careful with your health. But there’s something about the mix of speed and precision that keeps you retrying instead of rage-quitting. If you’ve ever wondered what Sonic would play like if he were a squirrel with a grudge against owls, this is your answer.
