You control one of seven fighters, like Scorpion or Sub-Zero, in one-on-one battles across various stages. The main goal is to win a series of fights in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Signature mechanics include the high and low block buttons for defense and the ability to perform special moves, like throwing a spear or shooting an ice blast. The game is known for its Fatalities, finishing moves you input after winning the final round to kill your defeated opponent in a gruesome way. The pacing is fast, and the computer opponents can be brutally difficult, especially later in the ladder. It feels raw and aggressive, a direct and visceral experience for a home console.
