Man, Mike Ditka Power Football on the Genesis is one of those old-school sports games that somehow feels both janky and weirdly satisfying. You pick your team—I always went with the Bears, obviously—and then it’s just you, some pixelated players, and a playbook that’s way simpler than Madden but still lets you pull off sneaky runs or deep passes if you time it right.
The graphics are pure 16-bit nostalgia—blocky helmets, tiny players, and end zones that look like someone colored them in with MS Paint. But there’s something about the way the running back stumbles after a hit or how the ball spirals (sort of) that makes it weirdly fun. Don’t expect realism, though. Half the time, your QB gets sacked before you even finish yelling “hike.”
It’s not the deepest football sim, but if you’re into retro sports games or just want to see Ditka’s pixelated face glaring at you from the title screen, it’s a solid time-killer. Just don’t blame me when you lose to the CPU on some last-second Hail Mary nonsense.
