Midnight Resistance came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, published by Data East. It was part of that early 90s wave of action games that tried to push the hardware with fast scrolling and big sprites. You saw a lot of games like this on the system, ones that were conversions of arcade titles but had to stand on their own in a crowded market.

You control a soldier on a mission to rescue your family from a sinister organization. The objective is straightforward: fight through each stage, defeat the boss, and move on. The game is built on screen by screen exploration; you move through a level, and the screen locks until you clear all the enemies. A key mechanic is the multidirectional shooting. Your character can aim in eight directions independently of his movement, which you manage with a second control input. You also collect weapon power ups, like a spread shot or flamethrower, that change your tactical options.
