About Micro Machines Turbo Tournament 96 (europe) (j-cart)

Micro Machines Turbo Tournament 96 came out for the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive in Europe, and it was published by Codemasters. This was during a time when the 16-bit consoles were still the main way to play at home, and Codemasters was known for squeezing a lot of fun out of the hardware. The version I played was the special J-Cart edition, which had two controller ports built right into the cartridge itself.

You control one of those tiny toy vehicles, racing across wildly unconventional tracks laid out on everyday surfaces like a breakfast table, a pool table, or a garden patio. The main goal is straightforward: finish first in a series of short, frantic races to win the cup. The signature mechanics are what make it stand out. The screen scrolls independently for each player, so if you fall too far behind, you simply vanish from the track and are eliminated. You also have to navigate constant environmental shifts; a spoon might suddenly lift to create a ramp, or a sink could start filling with water, changing the route entirely. The pacing is incredibly fast, and the difficulty can be punishing if you lose focus for even a second. It feels like a chaotic, high-stakes dash where a single mistake can cost you the entire race.
