Mickey Mania on the Genesis is one of those side-scrollers that looks way better than it plays. The animation’s smooth as butter—Mickey’s got this bouncy, rubbery charm straight out of the old cartoons—but the controls feel just a little off. Like, you’ll jump at a ghost in the Haunted House level and swear you should’ve landed that hit.

It’s got this cool gimmick where each level is based on a different era of Mickey’s history, from black-and-white Steamboat Willie to the Technicolor stuff. The Japan version’s mostly the same, though I think the difficulty’s tweaked? Either way, those pirate ship cannons in the third level will wreck you at least twice before you figure out the timing.

Fun to see once for the nostalgia, but you’ll probably tap out after a few Game Overs.
