Mary Shelley's Frankenstein on the Genesis is one of those weird licensed games from the '90s—you know, the kind that tried to ride the hype of a movie but ended up feeling kinda rushed. You play as Frankenstein’s monster, lumbering through gloomy villages and dark castles, smacking villagers with your big ol’ arms. The controls are clunky, and the platforming is frustratingly stiff, but there’s something oddly charming about the gothic pixel art and the way the monster groans when he jumps.
It’s not exactly a hidden gem, but if you’re into janky retro platformers or just love Frankenstein’s aesthetic, it’s got a weird appeal. The Sega CD version bundled with Dracula is even weirder, with full-motion video cutscenes that look hilariously dated now. Definitely more of a curiosity than a must-play.
