About Madou Monogatari I (japan)
Madou Monogatari I came out for the Sega Genesis in 1996, developed by Compile. It was one of the later releases for the system in Japan, a time when many developers were already moving on to newer hardware. This game serves as the chronological beginning for the series, setting up the world before the more widely known Puyo Puyo puzzle games.
You control a young girl named Arle Nadja, who must climb a multi-level tower filled with monsters. The game plays out screen by screen; you explore these discrete rooms, navigating corridors and encountering enemies on a grid. Combat is turn-based, letting you choose to attack with a short-range weapon or use one of your limited MP points to cast a spell. Your main goal is straightforward: reach the top of the tower. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be sharp, especially when managing your resources for healing and magic. Progress feels earned through careful exploration and smart battles, creating a simple but satisfying sense of ascent.
